Lucaris, Cyril
(1572–1638)
   Patriarch and Theologian.
   Lucaris was born in Crete and was educated in Verona and Padua. He became Patriarch of Alexandria in 1601, after serving the Orthodox Church for a time in Poland. This experience seems to have turned him against Roman Catholicism and both in Alexandria and Constantinople (where he succeeded in 1620), he showed decided favour towards the Protestant Churches. He maintained good relations with several Protestant leaders: his own theology was influenced by that of calvin and he encouraged the translation of the Bible into the vernacular for his own people. As Patriarch, he was deposed several times, but was restored largely through the intervention of the British and the Dutch. However, in 1638 he was put to death on the order of the Sultan Murad. Lucaris’s theology was finally condemned within the Orthodox Church at the Synod of Jerusalem in 1672.
